The respiratory system consists of four parts: the upper airway that starts from the mouth and nose, the lower airway below the neck such as the bronchus and lungs,
the thoracic cavity surrounding the chest, and lastly the mediastinum encompassing the blood vessels, nerves, and heart structures at the center of the chest.

These organs inhale oxygen from the air and send it to the lungs. They melt oxygen in blood and deliver it to different parts of the body. During exhalation, they discharge carbon dioxide, which is a metabolite of the body.

If you have any abnormal condition in your respiratory system, you may experience specific symptoms such as cough, sputum, dyspnea, chest pain, and hemoptysis or general symptoms such as fever, weight loss, and adynamia. The Department of Pulmonology & Allergy diagnoses and treats various diseases accompanied by such symptoms and aims to prevent the diseases.

There are a wide range of causes of respiratory diseases.
In a broader sense, we aim to treat infection, allergic disease (rhinitis, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, various types of eosinophilia, anaphylaxis, etc.), respiratory system tumor, rheumatoid lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, environmental and occupational pulmonary disease, pleural and mediastinal disease, sleep apnea, respiratory failure, and other relevant serious diseases.

Since there are a wide range of diseases, diagnosis and treatment methods are also very diverse. In many cases, the symptoms of systematic diseases manifest in the lungs, so the Department of Pulmonology & Allergy is closely associated with other clinical areas. We also play an important role in consultation for surgery.

The Department of Pulmonology & Allergy basically performs blood test, sputum examination, microbial test, and lung cancer screening on top of clinical inquiry and physical examination. We also perform bronchial endoscope and utilize state-of-the-art CT, PET, MRI, and other various nuclear medical examinations for diagnosis and treatment. Lastly, we conduct the following special tests as well:

Allergy skin test

To identify causative antigens of allergic conjunctivitis, rhinitis, asthma, and atopy

Pulmonary function tests

Simple pulmonary function test, bronchodilator reaction test, bronchial challenge test, pulmonary diffusing capacity test, and cardiopulmonary exercise test

Bronchial endoscope

Bronchial endoscope test and ultrasonography bronchial endoscope test

We provide educational sessions regarding various diseases, anti-smoking, and early checkup of lung cancer including how to use inhalers and inhalants. In addition, we provide a lecture on allergy for local residents every year and hold an annual pulmonology and allergy symposium for our medical professionals and a workshop for critically ill patients every year.
