Orthopedic surgery is a branch of medicine for studying and preserving all shapes and functions of the musculoskeletal system including the spine and extremities based on medical, surgical, preventive medical, and physical methods for the body parts’ recovery and improvement.

Diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system manifest as pain, deformities, dysfunction, etc. If such conditions are neglected, they may cause permanent disabilities, which lead to a degraded quality of life. In addition, patients may need an assistant for the rest of their lives. To prevent and minimize the disabilities, orthopedic diseases require accurate diagnosis and treatment.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery diagnoses and treats anomalies, deformities, inflammations, tumor, metabolic diseases, and other types of diseases of the locomotorium such as bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, traumas of the blood vessels, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves such as fracture, dislocation, sprain, rupture, and contusion. Our ultimate goal is to repair the functional problems of the locomotorium so that patients can go back to their normal lives. We take care of all musculoskeletal conditions through conservative treatment and nonsurgical treatment such as prevention and rehabilitation as well as surgical treatment.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery consists of nine professors and three residents for each year of residency, and they are actively involved in medical care, research, and education.

Our practice fields are subdivided into spine surgery, fracture-and-trauma surgery, knee joint surgery, hand surgery, foot-and-ankle surgery, shoulder joint surgery, hip joint surgery, and pediatric orthopedic surgery. Through close cooperation between our medical practice fields, we are doing our best to provide swift, smooth medical care services.

The Chung-Ang University Hospital Department of Orthopedic Surgery is handling over 3,000 cases of various surgical operations every year. We aim at safe and effective surgical and non-surgical treatment. We also make efforts for research and publish numerous papers every year in order to provide the best treatment for patients. We are always doing our best to maintain our medical service at Korea’s highest level and to become one of the best hospitals in the world.
