The Department of Urology is responsible for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of men and women’s urine-associated diseases, adrenal disorders, and men’s genital organ diseases. The scope of our medical practice includes urine-associated organs such as kidney, ureter, urinary bladder, and urethra and male reproductive organs such as testis, epididymis, vas deferens, scrotum, penis, and prostate.

The Department of Urology is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases occurring in the urinary system—which produces and transports urine—such as kidney, ureter, urinary bladder, and urethra, male reproductive organs such as testis, epididymis, vas deferens, and scrotum, accessory glands, and adrenal gland. Prostate diseases, urinary tumors, micturition disorders, female urinary diseases, etc. are increasing in modern society. In addition to treatment of disease, it is important to preserve and restore the functions of the surgical site for patients’ quality of life.

The department was first founded at the time of foundation of the Korea Medical Service Institute-affiliated Sungshim Hospital in 1968. In July 1971, the Class of Urology was founded with the reorganization of the hospital into the Chung-Ang University College of Medicine-affiliated Hospital. The Department of Urology has been taking the lead in the domestic advancement of urology with numerous “first” titles such as Korea's first penile prosthesis implantation, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy lab, central and innovative cancer research-centered cooperative hospital (in urogenital organ, selected by the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Family Affairs), urogenital disease-specializing research center selected by the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Family Affairs, and Da Vinci Surgical System introduced recently.

The Department of Urology introduced an extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter for the first time in Korea, which led to innovative incision-free treatment for urolithiasis. We have the most extensive experiences in this field, and we are operating the Urolithiasis Center. In addition, we contributed to the development of male reproductive medicine by performing penile prosthesis implantation for the first time in Korea. We have extensive experience and expertise in this field. We are proactively utilizing robotic surgery—the core of hi-tech medicine—for the treatment of urinary tumors (prostate cancer, renal cancer, and bladder cancer) and benign diseases (ureteropelvic junction obstruction and benign prostatic hyperplasia). Medical professionals at the Chung-Ang University Hospital Department of Urology provide specialized and customized medical care services based on their medical expertise accumulated through numerous national research projects.
