The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is responsible for the surgical treatment of patients who require oral surgery or surgery of any part of the face.
The official name of the medical department under the Medical Service Act is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It may sound difficult, but it means the department of mouth, jaw, and face surgery. As its name suggests, the department specializes in the surgical treatment of the mouth, jaw, and face. OMS stands for oral and maxillofacial surgery or oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
Among a wide range of medical consultation fields, Chung-Ang University Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses on orthognathic surgery and jaw reconstruction surgery. We are putting efforts into improving patients’ appearance as well as facial functions. If it is impossible to realize ideal teeth arrangement only with orthodontic treatment due to the mismatch between the upper jaw and the lower jaw, it must be accompanied by orthognathic surgery. Obtaining the best orthognathic surgery result requires considering all factors including the occlusion between upper and lower teeth, location of temporomandibular joint, expected location of the jawbone after surgery, and all soft tissues covering the facial bones.
In East Asia including Korea, there are many patients with prognathism whose lower jaw has grown more than the upper jaw. On the other hand, some patients have a short chin due to the poor development of the lower jaw or degenerative diseases of the temporomandibular joint. Before an orthognathic surgery, the patient’s teeth are arranged neatly on the jawbone through orthodontic treatment. After surgery, final orthodontic treatment is done to realize the harmony of the face and improve mastication. For patients with asymmetric or overdeveloped facial bones even though the occlusion of their upper and lower teeth is normal, we improve the symmetry of their facial bones and their appearances through facial bone contouring surgery. In addition, for patients who want to get back their original faces after facial contouring surgery or orthognathic surgery or those who need facial bone reconstruction due to accident, tumor, and deformity, we provide functional and aesthetic facial bone reconstruction treatment using state-of-the-art digital technologies and 3D printing.
We succeeded in jaw reconstruction using a 3D printed titanium artificial jaw for the first time in Korea and cheekbone reconstruction using 3D printing bioceramics prostheses for the first time in the world. We reconstruct facial bones using various materials such as titanium, bioceramics, silicon, and PCL depending on the patient’s condition. We have been obtaining good surgery results.
